Abstract

The evolution of the main macroeconomics indicators associated with Portuguese tourism, if demonstrating that related activities with this sector are associated with some of the country’s main production specialization, also highlight the need for a strategic reflection on tourism insertion on a regional context. This article, while aiming to answer these concerns, starts by outlining a quantified analysis for the structure of Portuguese tourism spatial activities, by building a localization weighed tourism index, whose goal is to analyze the importance these activities have on the Portuguese regional “industries”. On a second stage, a qualitative typology is developed aiming at analyzing the tourism structural potential on a regional basis. Finally, central problems are considered as well as strategic areas for actions according with the presented typology and based on the main factors that define sustainable tourism development.
