Characterization and Analysis of the Potential for the Development of Cultural Literary Tourism in Coimbra

Abstract

Literary places have been widely recognized as tourist destinations. The present article aims: (i) to situate Coimbra in the context of cultural tourism and literary tourism in Portugal; (ii) to present the results of the inventory of literary tourism products existing in Coimbra; (iii) to present the results of the inventory of literary places in Coimbra that can be linked to the writers’ biographies; and (iv) to promote debate on the city's literary tourism potential. The first phase of the research included gathering information, works and texts that will support both the empirical analysis and the state of the art of the literary tourism product in Coimbra. Based on the results obtained, we assessed their potential and identified the need to design and make available a literary cartography of the city, which enables the development of the literary tourism niche in Coimbra.
