Abstract

This work aims to estimate and analyse net migration, for age cohorts and sex, in the intercensal period, from 1991 to 2001, for depressed interior regions NUTS III of Portugal. This net migration structure will be estimated using an indirect method based on the intercensal component equation. This method consists on a comparison between population existing on each group, in 1991 and in 2001, according to the Census. The result will be the populational growth from which will be taken the difference due to natural events: deaths and births. The result will be net migration. The results will show a positive net migration on these regions, during the period 1991 – 2001. This migration happens mostly on age cohorts superior to 40 years old, for both sexes. It will also show a negative net migration in the younger groups, which are beginning their professional career. These are several reasons behind this results, among them can are the lack of opportunities given to young people and also the search for a certain kind of life quality in older people. The main consequence of this type of migration is the reinforce of aging population in these regions. In this work we will discus risks and opportunities derived from this phenomenon.
