Intergenerational Education in the Context of Migration and Return Migration in Brazil: An Analysis Through Generalized Ordered Logit

This study proposes to investigate the intergenerational mobility of education for migrants and return migrants in Brazil using microdata from the 2014 PNAD and its supplement. The persistence of education among children who migrated in childhood and their parents was measured. An application of the generalized ordered logit model was used in order to investigate the determinants of intergenerational mobility in education. It was found that the migration of young migrants in Brazil, whose decision was made by the father or mother, generates educational gains for these when reaching adulthood, when compared to non-migrant countrymen as well as those who migrated with their parents and decided to return to its origins. It was also found that individual characteristics, family and regional backgrounds have great power in altering the probabilities of individuals reaching the highest levels of education.
