Abstract

Vaccination is a fundamental pillar of public health conditions in countries, preventing diseases and reducing economic costs. In Brazil, childhood vaccination coverage has been declining since 2016. Considering this scenario, this study aims to analyze the effects of education quality on childhood vaccination coverage in the state of Minas Gerais between 2013 and 2019. Specifically, it examines the effects of the weighted average of proficiency indices in Mathematics and Portuguese Language in the 3rd year of high school on an index constructed through Principal Component Analysis, which includes vaccination coverage for three essential immunizations for children under one year of age: polio, MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella), and pentavalent vaccines. The econometric analysis, based on data from the Minas Gerais Social Responsibility Index (IMRS), employed a dynamic panel data model, and the results indicated that improvements in education quality are associated with increased childhood vaccination coverage. This suggests that individuals with access to higher-quality education are better able to discern conflicting information about vaccination, thereby increasing childhood immunization rates. Furthermore, the intergenerational transmission of human capital enhances this effect, as better-educated parents are generally more consistent in adopting preventive practices, creating a positive cycle of immunization adherence.
