Current social contexts have contributed for the development of a new concept of consumption, where the efficiency and diversified behaviour changes the expansion of the retailing commerce sector. This article was carried out in the framework of a broader evaluation project for the commercial activity in the Algarve region that intends to characterize purchase habits. From 1041 inquiries carried through a consumer's significant sample we concluded that although two distinct groups exist - those that prefer the independent proximity commerce and those that prefer wide distribution - none of the groups assume not using the other commercial format. The results allowed the identification of a group of vectors that must guide the development strategy of commerce in the Algarve.
